Global Forest Watch

Using the GFW platform to support cross-country deforestation dialogue, evidence-based education and environmental advocacy

Global Forest Watch is a free interactive online forest monitoring and alert system launched in February 2014. It provides precise global information about the status of forest landscapes, including areas of tree cover loss and recent fires.

Community Commons was one of only two organizations in the US to receive an award from the GFW Small Grants Fund in 2015. The goal of the project is to support evidence-based education and integrate exploration of local environmental change through satellite image analysis in the GFW environment into STEM curriculum.

In this project, we partner with several schools in San Diego, as well as with the Global SchoolNet  and Transparent World.
